Our England diary
Monday
After 12 hours, a lot of binge watching and uncomfortable sleep we arrived in Dover, Great Britain. Then we started our day by driving a few minutes to the Dover castle. We still had some time left to take a walk down to the beach, where we took some pictures and picked up some shells. Then we had to walk back up to the castle. We enjoyed the beautiful view from the hills, down on the roughy sea and the city. Around noon we finally drove to Hastings, where we had traditional fish and ships as lunch. After that we went to an interesting tea party, hosted by a crazy lady, who taught us how to behave correctly while having a traditional English tea. Lady Rebecca showed us different kind of teas and explained their history and health benefits. At 18 o’clock the host families picked us up and we spend a lovely evening with them. The day was very exciting for all of us. (Mathilda & Mila)
Tuesday
Everybody was thrilled because it was our first day in London. We arrived 2 hours later than planned because 4 students couldn’t find their pickup-point. When we arrived, we walked through Greenwich Park which was really beautiful. In the park we had a great view of the London skyline. Taking the underground to Westminster was very exciting for all of us because most of us never did this before. We saw Westminster Abbey, the House of Parliament, the Big Ben and the Buckingham Palace in the St. James’s Gardens. Then we got to our meeting-point in Victoria Embankment Gardens and from there we could decide individual what we wanted to do. That was awesome because every student has their own interests. Many students went shopping and some sightseeing. After 2 hours we met at our meeting-point and the teachers were late, but they didn’t want to tell us why which was really funny. At the end we took a Thames clipper back to our bus which allowed us even more beautiful views of London. After that we drove back to Hastings. That was our second day in England. It was exhausting but amazing. (Charlotte & Helene)
Wednesday
On Wednesday we went on a really interesting hike along the “Seven Sisters”. At the start of the day it rained, but it didn’t stop us from enjoying the wonderful nature and the breath-taking view of the Channel. After that we drove to Brighton where we could either shop in the city or visit the Pier of Brighton where you could go into an arcade or enjoy various roller coasters. (Anna & Sophia)
Thursday
Thursday was the 4th day of our trip to Great Britain. After another (as they would say it here) lovely breakfast, we walked to our Pick-Up Point and got into the bus. About 1,5 h later, we all arrived in London at the O2-Arena, where we took the Jubilee Line to Kensington. While sitting in the tube, we googled the Museums we were planning on visiting today. We couldn’t agree on one so we decided to split… One of us went to see the science museum, while the other one visited a museum called „Victoria & Albert”, which was about art, in different kind of forms (jewellery, paintings, design…). At one o’clock we all met to discuss and organize the rest of the day. Again, we decided to split: Emma went to have a rather chilled day, while I started to plan a route to see a few sights. Me and a few friends took the tube to walk through Hyde Park and visited famous Buckingham Palace. After that, we spontaneously watched a marching band in front of the guard museum. For a late lunch we got noodles in Chinatown. Our next destination was SOHO and Oxford Street, where I met Emma again. By then it was almost 5 o’clock, so we headed back to the bus. As we arrived in Hastings, we went back to our Host Family’s House and then got a Pizza, which we later ate by the ocean. (Mila & Emma)
Friday
Today we were visiting the smuggler caves and Canterbury Cathedral. In the caves was an interesting and sometimes scary presentation about being a smuggler and how they spend most of their time in the dark and narrow caves. One of the most interesting points was the history of the smugglers. Did you know that they used to be very popular and sometimes even were called gentlemen? Besides that, we also were visiting Canterbury Cathedral an old, huge and very beautiful cathedral. After we went to the smuggler caves we had time to discover Hastings on our own. Many students went shopping one last time or tried the famous fish and chips. Then we visited the Canterbury Cathedral one of the oldest and most famous christian structures in England. The cathedral is really beautiful and quite tall with a height of 73 m. Unfortunately, we were a little bit late so we didn't have much time to see the inside of the cathedral but it was still a wonderful experience. (Laurienne & Joris)
